The Frog and Onion…

The Frog and Onion Noel Street NG7

… previously known as The Carlton. Many thanks to Ruth of Gregory Boulevard for pointing this out.

In the mid 90’s I used to frequent this pub as many students have before and no doubt will since. The stong memories I have of this pub at this time are hearing dominoes being played as an action sport. Crack go the tiles with such a force that the sound can be heard way back in the pool room. Also of the bag men who used to wonder round the tables with large bulging sports bags selling smuggled goods to all intersted parties. Tobacco, spirits and cigarettes. As an undergraduate on a budget the bag men were a welcome addition to any pub visit. Goodness knows if this still happens, somehow in the current crackdown climate I suspect not.

Happy carefree days of afternoon sessions with no responsibilities…

The Wheatsheaf Inn Ilkeston Road

The Wheatsheaf Inn Ilkeston Road Nottingham NG7 3GQ
Stumbling about Area 4 with a camera on a sunny morning in mid April I was dismayed to note that the Wheatsheaf on Ilkeston Road is no more. I have fond memories of the place from visiting student friends in the area in the 90’s. The Wheatsheaf felt out of step even then so I guess that time coupled with the smoking ban in pubs caught up with it.

Looking at the photo I took this morning I am surprised that anyone could see the pub’s entrance with all of the council signage outside the front door!
