About

Area 4 is one of nine districts of Nottingham. As part of it’s 10th year celebration the Partnership Council is compiling a collection of comments and anicdotes about the Area. The findings will be published here in August 2008.

If you wish to find out more about this project or are interested in contributing an item please contact alan@partnershipcouncil.co.uk

I would be most interested to know why this area is Called Area 4 and how the bounderies were decided? Also when did this happen? Answers by email would be lovely.

Alan

I’ve seen the blog. It looks quite recent. I will post a link to my blog. The use by Nottingham City Council of ‘Area’ numbers to define its local community structure tells you a lot about the thinking of the bureaucracy and politicians who govern Nottingham. ‘Area 4’ includes the Domesday community of Radford, Hyson Green and parts of historic Lenton parish. The original proposals for the Partnership Council area included most of New Lenton, but the area was, in the end, excluded.

As one of the founders of the Dunkirk and Lenton Partnership Forum in 1996 we seriously thought about including that part of Lenton which is between the Derby Road and Ilkeston Road, but in the end we decided to use the Derby Road as our northern boundary. 12 years on and this is under review. The Forum also played a major role in determining Radford’s present electoral ward boundaries insomuch it was its proposals to the Local Government Commission for England in 1999 for the Lenton and Radford areas which were accepted instead of City Council proposals.

There is a lot to be said for the Forum and Partnership Council working closer together. Radford had a wonderful radical tradition for much of the 19th century when it was the largest township in the county (apart from Nottingham). Perhaps it can regain its radical tradition in the 21st century?

I look forward to seeing your blog develop and, who knows, perhaps a display in the Radford and Lenton Library before too long?

    Robert

I know the Area 4 Committee was first talked about in a City Council report in 1997. Not sure when they established the 9 areas, but I think it was about the same time.
