Hyson Green – what’s in a name?
October 22, 2008
On October 19th 1330 Edward the 3rd walked down what is now Radford Road with a squad of men-at-arms on his way to arrest Roger Mortimer who was hiding out at Nottingham Castle. At that time Hyson Green was sandy scrubland dotted with gorse bushes. The whole area was part of the then Sherwood Forest waste, an unwooded hinterland before the forest proper began.
Scroll forward 484 years to 1814 and the area has settled down with the name High Sands, as opposed to the low sands of Radford. Around this time the area also paraded under the name Ison. This play on High Sands was enhanced by a Mr. John Pepper built two houses and named them Ison Green. By 1824 Mr. Pepper had established a popular tea garden and bowling green and had opened “The Cricket Players” pub. Mr. Peppers mini empire is reported as being a public resort. Soon after that the area switched from High Sands and Ison to become the slightly more upmarket Hyson Green.

I was interested to read about the history of Hyson Green, especially as it was on the route I took every day for the seven years I went to the Manning School!
We often used to do our shopping there and I spent many happy hours at the Grand cinema club on Saturday mornings!
It is good to read positive blogs from Nottingham as I was getting a plethora of tags from one Nottm woman who seems to spend her life looking for any bad publicity. (She must be from Derby or Leicester lol)

Great blog – really interesting to read about the origins of the name Hyson Green. I am the blogger Granny Anne who posts about negative things to do with Nottingham at ‘Nottingham is Crap’.
I live in Nottingham and care about the City. I post about the negative things in Nottingham as I want Nottingham to be even better than it is.
In my opinion there are too many people shouting about how other cities are worse tahn Nottingham. I don’t care about other Cities, I just want our City to be as good as it can be.

Just curious if anyone knows the origins of Hyson Green. Was it originally owned by someone named Hyson? Thanks.
